It's July in Memphis. It's 98 degrees on the porch, hotter on the dashboard, and your phone just flashed a temperature warning at the ballpark. Before you panic — some of that is normal. Some of it isn't. Here's how to tell the difference, from the bench at our Germantown shop where we see heat-stressed phones every single week of summer.
Why summer is so hard on your phone
Phone batteries like the same weather you do — roughly 60 to 85 degrees. Memphis in July sits well past that, and three habits push phones over the edge:
- The car dashboard. A parked car in a Memphis parking lot can pass 140°F inside in under an hour. That's the single fastest way we see batteries age.
- Charging in the heat. Charging makes heat on its own. Charging on a hot patio table, in a hot car, or under a pillow stacks heat on heat.
- Sun + camera or maps. GPS navigation on a phone mount in direct sun, or shooting video at the pool, works the processor hard while the sun cooks the case.
What's normal
A phone that's warm after 20 minutes of navigation, gaming, or fast charging is doing its job. A one-time temperature warning after it sat in the sun isn't a repair problem either — let it cool in the shade (not the freezer — more on that below) and it'll come back fine.
What's not normal
These are the signs the heat has already done damage, and they're worth a free checkup:
- Battery draining way faster than last month. Heat permanently eats battery capacity. If you're charging twice a day now and weren't in May, the battery took a hit.
- Random shutdowns — especially with 20–30% still showing.
- Hot while doing nothing. Warm during a game is fine. Hot in your pocket doing nothing is not.
- A swollen battery. If your screen is lifting at the edge or the case doesn't sit flat anymore, stop charging it and bring it in today. A swollen battery is the one phone problem that shouldn't wait for the weekend.
- Battery Health below 80% (iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health). Below 80%, Apple itself calls the battery worn.
What to do when your phone overheats
- Get it out of the sun and take the case off.
- Stop charging until it's cool.
- Close the heavy apps (camera, maps, games).
- Let it cool at room temperature.
Don't put it in the freezer or the fridge. The sudden swing causes condensation inside the phone — now you've traded a heat problem for a water problem, and we've written about how that goes.
When it's time for a new battery
Batteries are consumables, like tires. Two Memphis summers is a lot of miles. If your phone is two or more years old and you're seeing the warning signs above, a battery replacement fixes it for a fraction of a new phone — and it usually takes us under an hour while you run errands on West Street.
Every battery we install is covered by our 90-day warranty, same as every repair we do. Check our battery replacement page for details or the full price list for your model.
FAQ
How long does a phone battery replacement take in Memphis?
Most iPhone and Samsung battery swaps are done same-day at our Germantown shop, usually under an hour. Walk-ins welcome — no appointment needed.
Is it bad to leave my phone in the car in a Memphis summer?
Yes. Cabin temperatures past 140°F permanently reduce battery capacity even when the phone is off. Take it with you or tuck it in the glovebox with the AC running.
My phone shuts off with battery left — heat damage?
Very likely a worn battery that can't hold voltage under load; hot weather makes it show up sooner. A battery check tells you in minutes, free.
Does a temperature warning mean my phone is broken?
Once, no. Weekly, or paired with fast drain and shutdowns — bring it by and we'll check the battery for free.
What does the 90-day warranty cover?
Defects in the part or our workmanship — if a battery or screen we installed acts up on its own within 90 days, we make it right. It doesn't cover new accidents: drops and impacts after a repair affect both the device and the replacement part, so those fall outside the warranty. Not sure which one you're looking at? Bring it in and we'll tell you straight.
