Most phone repair shops in Memphis are honest, hardworking businesses. But the industry has always attracted a handful of bad actors — and if you don't know what to look for, you can end up paying more than expected, getting low-quality parts, or in rare cases, having your data stolen. Here are the most common phone repair scams we see in the Memphis area and how to avoid them.
Scam #1: The Bait-and-Switch Quote
How it works: A shop advertises "iPhone 14 screen repair — $89" online or on a sign. When you bring your phone in, the technician "inspects" it and suddenly the price becomes $180 because of "extra damage" they discovered, or because you need a "premium part" you weren't told about.
How to avoid it:
- Ask for a written quote before any work begins, including tax
- Confirm exactly what's included: parts, labor, warranty
- Ask: "Is this the total price I'll pay?"
- Reputable shops (including iFix Memphis) publish their prices online — check the full price list
Scam #2: The Fake "OEM" Part
How it works: The shop charges you premium OEM prices ($300–$400 for a screen) but installs a cheap aftermarket part ($30–$50 wholesale). The display looks okay initially but fails within months, at which point the shop claims it's "user damage" and voids the warranty.
How to avoid it:
- Ask the shop to explain the differences between their tiers (LCD, OLED, OEM). If they can't, that's a red flag.
- Ask for the part type to be written on the receipt (e.g., "Premium OEM OLED")
- Check True Tone after repair (on iPhones). If it works, it's likely OEM. If it doesn't, it's aftermarket.
- Look for a 90-day warranty minimum. 30-day or no warranty usually means cheap parts.
Scam #3: The Disappearing Shop
How it works: A new shop opens in a strip mall or mall kiosk, aggressively advertises low prices, does poor-quality repairs, then closes down within 6–12 months. When your repair fails and you try to use the warranty, the shop is gone and the owner is "no longer in business."
How to avoid it:
- Check how long the shop has been at its current location
- Look at Google reviews — a shop with only 5–20 reviews is a new business
- Prefer shops with 100+ Google reviews and a consistent 4.5+ star rating over multiple years
- iFix Memphis has been at 2054 West St since 2011 with 848+ Google reviews
Scam #4: The Data Theft Scam
How it works: A technician copies your photos, contacts, or banking info while the phone is in for repair. Sometimes sold to identity thieves, sometimes used for blackmail in severe cases.
How to avoid it:
- Never give the shop your passcode unless absolutely necessary for testing
- If a repair genuinely needs your passcode, change it to a temporary one before handing over the phone
- Back up your phone before dropping it off — if anything looks suspicious, you can factory reset
- Choose an established, reputable shop where employees are background-checked and repair is done in view of customers
- At iFix Memphis, our repair stations are visible from the counter — you can watch your device the entire time
Scam #5: The "We'll Buy Your Phone" Trap
How it works: You bring in a phone for a small repair. The shop tells you it's "too damaged to fix" and offers to buy it from you for a fraction of its value. They then repair and resell it for a big profit.
How to avoid it:
- Get a second opinion from another shop before selling
- Check eBay sold listings to see what your model actually sells for
- Be especially cautious if the shop pushes hard to "buy it now" or says the offer is "only good today"
Scam #6: The "Diagnostic Fee" Surprise
How it works: You bring in a phone and the shop doesn't tell you about any diagnostic fee. After they "inspect" your device, they charge a $40–$80 diagnostic fee you didn't know about — even if you decline the repair. The hidden fee is the scam, not the fee itself.
How to avoid it:
- Ask upfront: "What's your diagnostic fee, and does it apply toward the repair?"
- Reputable shops disclose their diagnostic fee before you hand over your device
- At iFix Memphis we charge a $59.99 diagnostic fee — always disclosed up front and applied toward your repair cost if you proceed with the fix
- Red flag: any shop that refuses to tell you the diagnostic fee until after they've looked at the phone
