One of the most common questions we get at iFix Memphis is: "How long should my iPhone battery last, and when do I need to replace it?" This guide gives you a clear answer, shows you how to check your own battery health, and explains exactly when (and why) it's worth replacing.
How Long Do iPhone Batteries Actually Last?
Apple designs iPhone batteries to hold 80% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles. A "full cycle" is one complete 0-to-100% charge, but those can be split across multiple partial charges.
In real-world terms, this means:
- Year 1: Battery feels like new — all-day battery, fast charging
- Year 2: Starting to notice shorter life; health around 88–94%
- Year 3: Often below 80% — daily charging, shutdowns, throttling
- Year 4+: Unreliable; worth replacing
Heavy users (lots of gaming, video, navigation) hit 80% around month 18–20. Light users may not reach 80% until year 3.
How to Check Your iPhone Battery Health
- Open Settings
- Tap Battery
- Tap Battery Health & Charging
- Look at Maximum Capacity
This percentage tells you how much of your battery's original capacity is still available. iOS also shows whether Peak Performance Capability is throttled.
What the Numbers Mean
| Maximum Capacity | Status | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 95–100% | Excellent | No action needed |
| 85–94% | Good | No action needed |
| 80–84% | Aging | Start planning replacement |
| Below 80% | Degraded | Replace — Apple recommends it |
| "Service" warning | Critical | Replace immediately |
Signs You Need a New iPhone Battery
Even if your Battery Health is above 80%, replace if you experience:
- Random shutdowns — phone powers off at 20%, 30%, or higher
- Sudden percentage drops — jumps from 50% to 15% in minutes
- Charging that stops or resets unexpectedly
- Noticeable slowdown (iOS throttling to prevent shutdowns)
- Phone getting unusually hot during normal use
- Battery-related warnings in Settings
- Physical swelling — pushing the screen outward (stop using immediately)

Apple charges $89–$119 for out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement depending on model. iFix Memphis is typically $10–$20 cheaper and usually faster (Apple often requires an appointment and 2–4 hour wait).
If you have AppleCare+, battery replacement at Apple is free if your Battery Health is below 80%. For everyone else, local shops are usually the better deal.
Will Replacing My Battery Erase My Data?
No. Battery replacement does not affect your data, apps, or iCloud backup. Your phone will look and work exactly like before — just with all-day battery life again.
Should I Just Buy a New Phone Instead?
For an iPhone that's otherwise working fine, battery replacement is a much better value than a new phone. Spending $79 to get another 2+ years out of an iPhone 12 or 13 is hard to beat. If you're already due for an upgrade for other reasons (camera, speed, storage), that's different — but don't replace a working iPhone just for battery issues.
